Myths have an incredible power of making people feel a sens of belonging to their nation. They also used their amazing kind of writing and their way of being tell by people to make it more special. A truthful question is unavoidable: How the awesome power of myth come from and how it can be positive or negative to a single person or a society? The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World is “supposedly” a tale for children and was published in Leaf Storm and Other Stories in 1972, a collection of short stories by Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Briefly, this story is about a small community finding a dead man's body on the shore. After seeing him, everyone in the small village began to admire him and they finally decided to organize him a funeral, but a funeral worthy of a Esteban (that’s how they called him). When they realised he could not stay, they completely changed their village to remember his greatness. I think some amazing literary devices help the purpose by connecting people thought with the one the reader can imagine.
From the end of the fourth paragraph, there is a climax mixed with an hyperbole literary device that expres how awesome Esteban was from the point of view of the villager. “Not only was he the tallest, strongest, most virile, and best built man they had ever seen, but even though they were looking at him there was no room for him in their imagination.” This quote prove that Esteban had a positive impact on the ladies in the village, but at the same time, a vicious impact on the men. This kind of situation happened because Esteban was a new character in their lives, like a new student in a school. People are attracted by something or someone new, that’s how it is.
“[...], men and women became aware for the first time of the desolation of their streets, the dryness of their courtyards, the narrowness of their dreams as they faced the splendor and beauty of their drowned man.” This quote from the ninth paragraph, still at the end, is a powerful hyperbole that makes people realise how really they compare to Esteban. It says that you can change who you are only if you see something better than you are. It reminds me of the movie we talked about in class, As Good as It Gets. The main character who is interpreted by Jack Nicholson suffers from obsessive-compulsive disorder that makes him an antisocial. All changed though when he met a women (Helen Hunt) that see better in him and finally changed him completely.
To cap it all, I think The Handsomest Drowned Man In The World is a story for either children and adults. I also think that the two literary devices presented previously are probably the most connected to how a myth can impact a person or on a society. Therefore, this confirmed how literary devices help to make the reader’s thought.
